Hi there,

Hatched these two salmon faverolles from an eBay breeder’s eggs. I was assuming they’re cockerels the whole time due to the darker coloring, but just want to verify before rehoming them. Thanks friends 🙂

Both males. I love Faverolles. All of mine look almost exactly like him.

Female Faverolles are actually brown. Males are black. That is why they are called a auto-sexing breed. I'll get some pictures in a minute.
They're actually just very sexually dimorphic! Autosexing is when the chick down varies between the sexes :) With Faverolles, the feathers themselves are what set them apart and those come in later meaning it's not truly "autosexing"

When they are chicks thou, Their wing feathers are different colors. Thats why i would consider them autosexing. :D

The definition of autosexing is: "exhibiting different characters in the two sexes at birth or hatching autosexing chickens." Their wing feathers are not visible when first hatched. An autosexing breed would be a Cream Legbar for example. The males clearly have headspots and females have chipmunk markings. Also, with Salmon Faverolles many improperly marked birds are coming out of hatcheries. Sometimes the females can even have black breasts. This has made sexing even chicks that are a couple weeks old that have wing feathers unreliable. This may work for properly bred birds from a breeder, but it still would not make them autosexing :)

Here's some pictures of the males and females. Sorry about all the chickens in the background.
Black are males and the browns/tans are females.

Yeah. One of my girls does have a black breast.
