From Hoover's, specifically marked as pullets at Tractor Supply. Two and a half weeks old, differences in size, temperament, coloring, stance, comb color...

Sylvia, L; Ivy, R. Sylvia clearly has more white around the shoulders, copper frosting on her head, and is overall slightly bigger than Ivy. Initially, I wasn't sure if these were just due to normal variation from bird to bird.

Side by side, they look to be standing completely differently. Sylvia is in the back, tail held high, head above. Ivy's tail is down and overall posture is consistently lower than Sylvia.

Awkward pre-teen rooster stance?

Not the most artsy photo, but shows the dramatic difference in stance and tail position.

I didn't crop this one, but I thought the redness of the comb jumped out at me here. I have been noticing it by the brooder light and just thinking, hm, I guess if it's more of a white comb instead of black, the red light reflects really strong. 🙄 Maybe?

Thoughts? I know Wyandottes notoriously can pink up early, and may take longer to be sure.

They both look like pullets. Ivy just seems to have black on her comb and Sylvia doesnt and its throwing you off.

It's true, Sylvia could be a cockerel but try not to make yourself worry too hard at this age. You're going to know for sure around 6 weeks (or at least that's why I knew I had one of each SLW, both were supposed to be Pullets.)
Oh that's great to know! Trouble is I'm brooding chicks for someone else. I can kind of give him whatever, but if I knew I had all females it would make the sorting a heck of a lot easier lol

How old are yours now?

Pullet is 2years now, Cockerel is.... ?? Gone via Craig's list.... I got them at 5weeks from a local breeder so similar sitch as you where they honestly thought they were pullets. I knew within a few days that one was not. He had a really weird walk and I didn't know if it was due to a tight band around his foot that I had to cut off so I was sending them videos of his walk and we both said uh oh, different issue while looking closely at the 2. So that's my point on how even at 5 weeks it was not very clear, then just one day around 6 weeks, oops that's alot of Red going on, thick legs, all the classic signs. HOPE it turns out how you want!

A couple more fun pics of Sylvia from out in the run, four weeks today...

I feel like she's looking like a tough looking chick! As I was gathering the chicks to bring outside, she and Marshmallow were chilling together in the brooder, last ones standing, not that that means much of anything really. 🤷

Hey Chipmunk!

Beautiful birds there! I don't have too much more to contribute other than my opinion - and I believe you have a nice breeding pair there.
Lol Thank you! It is fun if nothing else to see that some of my instincts are starting to fire about a year into this. Haha. What makes you so confident?

Since you've read the thread, you know I've had my suspicions from very early on... Lol even when I was taking their first chick pics I was like, hmmm why aren't they running around being silly chickies? 🤔

It was honestly hard for me to tell them apart at this stage, but from the top view, Sylvia had more copper frosting on the head, and was always a bit bigger, and started to have more white coming in on the wings faster vs. Ivy.

I'm also wondering since he's clearly less dominant vs. Marshmallow and they are being raised together, if it could actually work out between now and whenever I start having some more hens running around here, or if I may have to make a decision sooner than later.

Oh man, I can't reveal my secret sauce!

Some of these, when you have just a single bird being sexed, can be more of a guessing game. However, when you one of each, it becomes far easier. Just your behavioral comparisons alone are enough, but the posture is what really seals the deal.
