Howdy y’all!

After the great egg/TP hoard of ‘20, we decided it was time for backyard chickens! One nice cozy coop of recycled barn wood (made by the sweetest old man who’d owned chickens his whole life), we took four golden comet pullets home, and it’s been quite the ride ever since!

The Pandemchicks have been laying now for nearly two months, and in that time, have failed to each lay their daily egg only a handful of times... they are machines!

They’re named apropos as follows:
WuHen
Peckademic
Dr. Fowlci...

....and of course, Carole Baskhen!

We are working from home in beautiful Austin, Texas, and my fenced suburban backyard is ripe with trees and nearly a quarter acre - basically a free-rang’hen paradise!

I’ve already learned countless lessons here the “easy” way thanks to this awesome community, and am so thankful for the heartache and hassle it has prevented.

One thing we’re fighting is the current drought, with the last 9 days’ highs over 100. The girls cozy up to cool/dust off in a nice shady area adjacent to the cool house slab and back porch. Since their coop is opposite the house (where it’s most shady yet has good grass for fresh tractor-pasture’n every few days) I’ve put out a bowl of extra water and douse their area just before the afternoon heat gets intense. I was thinking about putting a soaker hose there on a timer to automate the whole thing, though I hadn’t read anyone else doing that yet... any problems might create? They dust plenty before then, so I’m not worried about taking that away.

Thanks again and looking forward to years of sharing, learning, and eggs!

Oh and if you’d like to see them in the cluck’n flesh, give us a follow/shout on IG, same username as mine: @Pandemchicks2020
