Tylan 200 question

700

Most recent poop picture. I put her outside for a minute to stretch and to regain her will to live. Her poop is still watery, but atleast there is a little substance to it. She even walked over and pulled my EE feathers. No more odor coming out of her mouth, so I'm happy about that.

Hi there,

I'm in the exact same boat with Tylan 200! I've done a bunch of research, especially on this site's forums and the responses are great! However, throughout my digging I have not been able to find the answer to this follow up question,

How do I know if the Tylan 200 worked? Will it be an immediate back to health or no?

My seemingly healthy chickens have been removed from the obviously unhealthy chickens, but everyone is getting injections just to nip it in the bud.

I have seem multiple dosage recommendations and have chosen

.20-.25 cc of Tylan 200 injection once a day for THREE DAYS.

So my follow up question is now what? After three days (which will be tomorrow), are the obviously unhealthy ones going to look and act miraculously better?

Should I move any "unhealthy" ones to the "healthy" coop if they make that ideal turn around?

If the "unhealthy ones" don't get "healthy" after THREE days, do I give them more Tylan? Or is it time to say goodbye? (I know that sounds harsh, but their chest rattle cough/sneezes are terrible, there's bubbles in their eyes and vomit).... The healthy ones have bright eyes and do not cough/sneeze. But I understand that they can be carriers none the less.

I really appreciate any feedback on what to do after day three!!!

I'm not sure...I haven't given it yet to my sick bird, I have only given baytril by mouth. Maybe you can give baytril, its a good antibiotic, but its actually not allowed in poultry due to antibiotics being passed to humans through eggs.

Just curious... How did you give the tylan? IM, subcutaneous o by mouth??

Unfortunately time was of the essence, and Tylan 200 was the only thing available to me in my local stores. They are getting a shot just under the skin on their breast.

To get the best results when treating for mycoplasma or enteritis, Tylan 200 or Tylan 50 should be given at least twice a day, and it should be give by weight. The directions for Tylan powder say the dose is 50mg per pound per day. The problem with injecting Tylan is that it can cause severe injection site necrosis, which I have seen in one of mine. If I ever use it again I will give it orally, and I will give the 50mg per pound dose.

Twice a day
50mg per pound per day = 0.125ml *per pound* twice a day

Three times a day
50mg per pound per day = 0.083ml *per pound* three times a day

Thanks for your input, Kathy!! :)

Do you, or anyone else, know what I should be looking for at the end of the last dosage? Will those sick ones be back to normal and be able to join the healthy ones?

Would you give the injectable orally? If you could pick between tylan200 or baytril for enteritis, is baytril a better choice?

I would give it orally unless the bird's crop wasn't clearing. If the enteritis was from a clostridial infection, I would give Tylan or metronidazole, but if I suspected E. coli, I would give Baytril.

How is you bird doing?

She's about the same, her crop is just so slow, still wasn't down this am from yesterday. It went down some, but not as much as I had hoped. I'm not even just if the baytril from yesterday has gone through, it might have, but not sure. Her poops have more substance to them, so at least the food is going through. She's not as weak as she was yesterday, so the food is helping. Is it a bad idea to give give tylan and baytril at the same time? I have no idea what to suspect with her.
I was even thinking about wrapping vet wrap around her just to apply a constant slight pressure on her crop in case if it has lost its muscle memory.

Look at these!

The most normal poops that I have seem from her in a while! Well the baytril seems to be working. Last SC fluids were on Wednesday night, now it's just tubing food and water. She's eating by herself, but not enough. Crop is clearing faster now. Thank you again Kathy for helping me with this hen. This is my second hen that you have helped me with.

Here she is....she's the enforcer and my alpha hens right hand man! Hopefully she continues to improve.
