Research has told me I need Tylan 50 (oral) for my hen sick with congestion. I cannot seem to find it at any feed stores. They tell me they cannot sell it anymore with the "new laws". Where do you find this antibiotic? Only at a vet?

Welcome to BYC! If you're in California I'm afraid that one can no longer buy any OTC antibiotics.

I'm sorry that your hen is sick.
What symptoms does she have?

Water soluble antibiotics came off the shelf beginning 2017 and are only available by prescription.

You should be able to find injectable Tylan50 at most Tractor Supply stores. Depending on your area, they may have it locked up somewhere. Some states may not allow sales of antibiotics either.

Injectable Tylan50 can be given orally or by injection. If you can give it by beak:) that would be best - so you avoid injection site necrosis (Tylan50 is administered at least 2X a day) If you can find it and need dosing info, let us know.

that sort of stinks Kathy - so....does that mean that all vets in CA will see chickens and fowl now since you can't seem to treat at home:D:oops:

I doubt that vets that aren't currently open to seeing poultry will start seeing poultry. :(

Actually, any dosing advice you have would be helpful for the tylan 50 to give her orally.

Ideal dose is 0.25 ml per pound *four* time a day.
If you can't do four, then do 0.33 ml per pound *three* time a day.
If three is too hard, do 0.5 ml twice a day.

Tylan works best if given 4 times a day, but that's hard to do, so give no less than twice a day.
