Hey all,

I've frequently seen people referring to bantam breeds as different types (eg. true, miniaturised, developed??) if that makes any sense, and having lightly searched the internet, I'm not finding many solid answers.
If someone could explain the different types of bantams to me, that would be great :)

Thanks, team!! :thumbsup

Trying to answer with a tired brain:caf.

Most bantams are produced by a sexlinked mutation. It's Sexlinked Recessive Dwarfism for alot of bantams.

True Bantams are Bantams that have no standard sized counterpart.

Bantams with Largefowl counterparts are often made with the mutation above.

Miniature are usually smaller Bantams, but Miniature can also just mean Bantam of some other breed, as Bantam means Miniature.

Miniatures can be made two ways, by crossing in Bantam into a Largefowl line, or breeding only from smaller birds in the Largefowl line reducing size gradually. These would be developed.

Miniatures are a miniature of a large fowl breed. They can be bred down from the large fowl, or bred by crossing a bantam with a large fowl and breeding down. Commonly they are just bred by crossing bantam breeds together to create something that looks similar to a large fowl breed. For example, Buckeye bantams were created by crossing Rhode Island Red and Cornish bantams.
When they were originally created, large Buckeyes didn't have any Rhode Island Red blood.
So they used different backgrounds to create the same look.
