I'm new to getting chickens and I can't find any solid info on types of grits. I also need to know if the grits can only be feed to chickens at certain ages. Also the benefits and quantities of each grit?
Thank you very much,
beginner chicken lover!

As long as you are only feeding chick starter/grower, they don't need grit. However once you start (sparingly) giving treats, they will. TSC usually has Chick grit on the shelf. I'll sprinkle a little in their bedding so they can scratch around for it. They're pretty good at figuring out what they need. I believe you can also use parakeet grit while they're small. Another option is just to bring them a clump of dirt from your yard for them to scratch through. There's medium stage of grit that I can't find anywhere but I'm not too worried about it because when the weather starts warming up, I give them regular outings to a fresh section of yard where they'll peck and scratch around to find their own pebbles in the dirt. Once they get to the run, they'll have free choice adult sized grit since the run has been picked pretty clean.

My chick feed actually does say to use grit with it, but I know that's not common. I use Scratch and Peck brand chick starter. I sprinkle it in the feed like salt and pepper, although I've stopped doing that now because they are on sand as bedding and go outside daily for field trips. :)

Thanks I will try sprinkling a little grit anyways. A little grit can't hurt
