Typical Hatch Rate Under a Broody?

I just had 7 out of 10 hatch about three weeks ago but I think the hatch rate has more to do with the eggs than with the hen. I got my eggs from someone about 5 miles away. They had all been laid within 24 hours prior. They weren't shipped. They weren't xrayed. I let them sit on the counter a few hours before putting them under my gal.

The year prior I put 11 eggs under the same hen. Only 1 hatched. However, they had been flown across country and had been xrayed.

IMO, if you can get fertile eggs locally, you'll have a better hatch rate.

I have hatched (or rather my hen hatched) anywhere from 0% to 100%. About 11 to 13 live and healthy chicks from every 15 eggs set is a good result.

The 3 biggest reasons for failure in my humble opinion is improper egg storage, poor brood flock nutrition, and diseased, weak, or aged brood stock.

To the above you may add fooling and fiddling too much with the hen or with her eggs.

My hen that sat on the ducks is 4 and a half years old and she did brilliantly and she is being very good at looking after them

Thanks for the great info. I am very happy with my Blue Sex Link hatches. One solid blue, one solid black, and 4 blue-and-white gingham. Not sure of the genders yet. Two appear male.

This year I only got 1 out of 5 but last year I got 5 out of 8. Ducks are way different, I got 13 out of 15 on my ducks
