I bought my flock of Silver Spangled Hamburgs (7 hens, 1 rooster) about four days ago. On the first day I had them, an egg was surprisingly laid, but since then, not one egg has been laid. I understand that maybe they are a little stressed out because of the relocation and new environment, but I was wondering: how long does this period of readjustment typically last? And what can I do to make them feel comfortable enough to start laying? Are there any "remedies" to get them to start laying?

My granny, who's raised chickens all her life, told me that her mother-in-law taught her to sprinkle cayenne pepper flakes in the chicken's food, and they'll start laying within a day or two. She swears by it. She also recommended that I lilacs ping pong balls or golf balls in the nests to simulate eggs.

These sounded a little bizarre to me, but I kinda trust my granny since she has years of experience and she's at that wise, old age lol... But what do you guys recommend??

Any advice is appreciated!!!

Moving to a new environment generally causes a stop in egg production. During the first two or three days eggs may be laid - these are the eggs that are already 'in process' in the reproductive tract. The fact that you only got one egg may indicate that the hens were in a normal break in the laying cycle. It is quite possible (given the time of year) that your hens may go through a molt prior to resuming egg production. I have heard others say that cayenne pepper will jumpstart egg production, but I have no experience with this.
