So (looking at your first post), she’s around 19 weeks now?

19 weeks is REALLY early to be laying. Does she look healthy? Is she eating well? Are her face and comb (and wattles, if she has them) red, or getting visibly redder day after day?

Is she a Buff Orpington? Mine started laying around 22 weeks, and my earliest layer (the EE) began around 20 weeks.

You’re right. She’s 19 weeks. She is eating a ton of oyster shell and egg shells. Maybe it’s not just her eating it. I do have her hatch mate Viola with a really red comb. She’s an EE. Nubia’s comb has been really red for almost 3-4 weeks now. She gorgeous and healthy. Bright clear eyes, shiny full feathers. Same with Viola

She’s getting ready!! Just by looking at the combs in the pics, I’d say that Nubia is closer to laying than is Viola, but then chickens were placed here on Earth to make us look dumb, so I wouldn’t bet more than a nickel either way.

This time of year, depending on your latitude, day length is anywhere from 8 to 20 minutes shorter than it was a week before. That has a significant effect on ovulation, and a bird nearing point of lay will be delayed due to light/dark cycle effect on the pineal gland.

Yes her comb is VERY red but she hasnt started squatting, but usually lays down all day next to what we call is her “nest” a little spot where no predators can get her

My buff girl’s comb is just that red just not as big of a wattle definitely will snap a pic rn
