TYSON made us sad

Pat, I understand what you are saying. I guess it all just goes down on the list of today's realities. I for one believe there is only one powerful enough to make things right in the world. On a similiar note, I was watching a PBS show about pollution and how even the ocean is so full of plastic that birds are keeling over from eating what they find, and yet we buy so many products that are wrapped, boxed and surrounded by plastic that we seem to not have much of a choice about it if we need the product. Sigh.

Where I live, seeing those trucks is an almost daily occurance. It always makes me so depressed, no matter how often I see it. I keep thinking we can change the world, one chicken, one family at a time, but I see those and reaize that in one single truck are hundreds of small, tortured, lives and feel kinda helpless.

Not all of those you see are meat birds. All of the egg layers are cleaned out after one year and trucked in the same way to be processed for animal food and soups. I will be getting some of the egg layers around the first of June (the ones missed by the "catchers") and can't wait to let them experience life for the first time.

Coopdelisle, I know what you mean about all that plastic!

I hate plastic! At the grocery store they ask: "Plastic OK?" I say, I prefer paper thanks! I also try to remember to take my cloth shopping bags. I don't bag my veggies in plastic either. I know it isn't much, but every little bit helps.

I'm helping some friends in a couple of months "harvest" their meat birds. I asked if I could help to see if I have the stomach for it. If it doesn't gross me out too much, I may get some meat birds. If it does, I may swear off meat, and stick to eggs and milk for my animal protein. And maybe some fish, I can't get too emotional over fish.

I have some of 'those' birds. Picked up off the the side of the road and by other means, but all from Ok Foods factory farms. It sickens me and everytime I see a truck and have time to follow it I do, and if I don't they get 'the bird'.
Today I went out to check on the fellas after I got home and Potpie can no longer walk. He is now a house resident and is hanging out on his new pillow. These birds have personalities just like your chickens, so if you can't eat yours...don't eat these guys either.

I am a veggie but I think if people raised their own meat/dairy they would not only be healthier (both animals and humans) but it would be more humane and people wouldn't take that burger on their plate for granted.

And baby cockerels are "Chicken by-products"...

It's not pretty for our convenience...we're not meant to see behind the curtain...

Heck I was driving somewhere with my DS and we saw a white thing by the side of the road...I looked quick and it was a chicken!!! O crud, it looked like a white cochin roo, so naturally I drove around and had to rescue it before someone swerved and hit it!!! I screeched to a halt in the breakdown lane put on the flashers and sent DS out to get the poor bird....
It was a STUPID CHICKEN SLIPPER!!!!

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry...
He's now named Roadhouse and sits on DS's bookcase.

My pet cornish x Bobo is doing great. He doesnt have alot of feathers on his tummy but thats the only place. He is quite fluffy besides that area. He is the sweetest chicken we have and all the other chickens follow him. He's their leader and the little ones snuggle him at night to stay warm. Don't let anyone convince you that they have no feelings and no personalities because it simply is not true.

That is hilarious, SpottedCrow!
You know this world is mixed up...I have a friend who has a young daughter that started having headaches and began to get busty at ten years old. Doctors told her she was developing early probably due to hormones in processed foods. We can only do so much when it comes to choices we make each day, but if each of us try to make the best choices, it has got to help...to make people aware at the least.

One of the reasons I became vegetarian, aside from the health benefits. I could not deal with my conscience when I would see trucks full of animals going down the road to slaughter...and even worse, the treatment they receive before that point. If I were going to eat meat, I would at least try to make the most humane (and chemical free) choices I could make. Meat has become too sanitized. If people knew what went into it, most would not eat it, at least not if they had a conscience. Personally, I do not want to kill animals, but I have a great deal of respect for those who raise their own meat and are as humane as possible with the animals.
