So I have a 12 week old Golden Campine and also a 12 week old EE. I also have 2 RIR about 6 months old. They have been living together since the babies were about 7 weeks old. I went away for Memorial Weekend and when I came back I noticed that my Campines nice big tail feathers were being plucked! I found a bunch on the coop floor etc. Well yesterday the last one was finally plucked out sometime! Now she looks like her rump is small! I know they will grow back and there isn't any bleeding. She is a happy little chicken and for the most part gets along great with the others. I think it is one of the older RIR Henryetta (Big Mamma for short). I am wondering did they do this because her tail feathers were so much longer then everyone elses? They aren't plucking here anywhere else. Should I really worry or will these feathers grow back and maybe in that time she will be older and they won't bug her? If you didn't know what a campine looked like you would never know they were missing but she used to have such a beautiful tail like a big fan!

I don't know what to do!

Ha ha I keep writing in my own post!

Should I research the answer or is anyone out there? Again the Golden Campine is getting along with everyone most the time and I have never actually seen one of the other chickens plucking her tail feathers but I think I have heard it!

Again any advice is greatly appreciated....

First off, just be a little more patient.

Second, no I wouldn't worry. I PURPOSELY plucked my hens' tail feathers because they were irrepairable and I wanted to show them in late summer.

Just give her time they will grow back as long as the whole feather was plucked out. If not, then it won't grow back. If you'd like you could feed her foods with high in protein/fats/oils. This can help speed up the growing process and make them nicer. Try some Black Oil Sunflower seeds, that should be enough. It takes a feather a minimum of 5 weeks to grow back so it will be a while, especially since they're her tail feathers.

OR: Do you have another chicken that has decided to start plucking the Campine's tail? Sometimes you will find that happens. Watch and see if the Campine is being purposelly plucked. Some chickens develope a taste for feathers!

And, Yeah, sometimes you have to "BUMP" your own post or it will be forever lost into the further pages of "recent posts".

Thanks you guys I was trying to be patient.

Yes the whole feather is plucked out, I actually saved them and could make my own tail from what I have. Like I said you would never know unless you had a campine that they were missing from looking at her. They usually always get along but I think it happens when they are in the coop. Yes I think it is one particular chicken which is older. I think it is intentional. The campine is always the first one out in the morning like someone is "hot on her tail" I just hope the older ones won't do it as much whe the youngsters get bigger....I get the black oil sunflower seed for other birds that comein the yard so I will try some of those.
