Ugh frostbite

You can search frostbite under the articles tab to find great information. Not sure why it's giving an error message.... apologies.
If you know in advance that extreme cold weather is coming you can put vaseline on combs before damage is done.
High roosts and great ventilation are important.
I live in Michigan and don't use heat sources ... ever. I'm too afraid of losing entire flocks due to fire hazards, call me crazy.... maybe I'm the chicken
Thank you! Yeah I’m terrified of using heat too! Way too risky!

Our coop is well ventilated, very dry (low to no humidity) with high wooden rods. I added extra bedding and put vasoline on everyone each night before going up to roost. I also gave them corn before bed to help warm them up.

Not sure what else I could have done???

Sometimes it just doesn't seem like we can do enough. I think you're doing a great job! This cold front has been just awful.
Keep doing what you're doing and maybe a little extra lovin :D

Nooo, don't feel like that! Same thing happened here dry, breeze free coop, chapsticked comb, full crop but boom my boy still got bit!
He has a big single comb and lost all the tips, looked worse than I felt.
Next month tips fell off and he's fine, he's still sexy for the ladies too and really if I didn't know he had bigger tips i'd never know it happened.
But no more frostbite, since then.:)
Oh that IS good news. I truly hope this is the case with my big guy. He’s super sweet and I feel like I let him down!

My poor Faverolle Roos also have frostbite on their combs. It's supposed to dip down below zero for a few nights soon and I am also feeling terrible for them! I don't heat my coop due to the roosting bars being rather close to the top of the coop... The babes would DEFINITELY catch on fire.

Glad to know that they will heal themselves. I feel bad for them! They DO NOT like being touched. If I go after one of the boys, his brother attacks me! Those mean boogers will have to deal with their hurt heads I guess :barnie

My 2 BOs were bit last night on the very tips of their combs. :( My SLW and EEs with the smaller combs are fine. Temps will be dropping into the -30F next week and I am torn between heating the coop and bringing them into the garage where its 20 degrees warmer. DH went to buy us a hygrometer because I am not sure what the humidity is like in the coop and I want to make sure it's dry.

Current temps around 14 degrees and the coop feels nice and cozy. All the birds are acting like it's just another day to scratch around so I guess that's good.

Lol, that's what lost tips here a Faverolles rooster. They wouldn't have such issues if they'd tuck their heads like the hens do. My hens didn't get bit at all.
