Thank you for the pictures. Although I think that rooster is gorgeous and would not mind having one that looks like that...Spanky looks way different, granted he/she is still young and may molt out yet again, my chicken isn't really red, it's more golden brown, nor does it have as much of the color on it's back or wings. The pictures I hve posted, are almost a week old, and Spank has definately "blackened out" more. Also, where Spanky is brown, the feathers are either spotted with black or has black striping and also the cheek feathers on it's face are coming in black... (???) As for the number of toes...Spanky as 4 on each foot (3 largers ones with a smaller 1 on the side) and the breed he/she is, is (mostly) Ameraucana (could be a mut...idk)

thndrdancr - haha, same! My red chicken, Ginger, is the one confusing me the most... Spanky has a good size comb and it's turing red but no waddles yet whatsoever, and Bo-Peep, well, that one's just "Special" in more ways then 1...lol

Chicks change colors as they grow. That is how my bb red colored chicks were colored as young cockerals. When chickens moult at sexual maturaty they get their adult colors. Rooster chicks start out drab brown but after molt become a shiny beautiful red color.

Spanky apprears to be molting opposite. When the "adultish" feathers first began to grow in the brown was much redder, but now it's lightening out into pale golden brown. He/she is turning more black on the back and whatever brown feathers are on it's back have white tips along with 2 white spots just behing the comb on top of it's head...

Why is it that the first time I get chickens, they have to be the oddest, most gender and breed confusing? - haha, I guess I'm just lucky.
