Well I got the application for a Domestic Gamebird Breeders License and geeze this is starting to get pricey what am I up to 70$ on the quail pen, haven't even gotten an egg turner yet but lets call that 40$, eggs 40$, license costs 50$ and their is a big chance I may get denied... because of the area I live in, then if I want to apply I'm going to have to get rid of the quail I have incase they come around looking. I mean... am I even going to make my money back? I'm trying to go by the motto "If I do it right It'll work" what I mean by that is getting a license, having good large birds, etc.

What do you guys think should I still go for it? Will I make my money back on them? All I'm really asking is to make that much back on them...I'm not sure I can count on BYC to much for egg selling because it seems like more people are trying to sell then buy LOL. But idk, couple od trios here and there, a couple of processed birds, some eating eggs, and some hatching eggs I could do it right? Please encourage me on lol because I really do want to get these birds but I'm afraid of getting into it to much.

I do NOT wanna be a party pooper, but so far my birds only cover their own feed.....mind you NOT all my birds are laying yet and I DO swap a lot

I look at it this way, How much would you be spending on meat that you are replacing with quail meat/eggs? I figure if we eat quail 4 times a month instead of chicken that's a $15 a month I'm not spending on chicken breasts (note CA prices). So I'd recoup that in under a year. Now if you're planning on selling them and not going for home consumption, it may not be "profitable" for several years, unless you can find a place to market quail eggs/meat, but again you may hit red tape there.

Long and short I'd go for it, with the understanding that it was like my gardens, something I do to feed myself, rather than a business.

My little buttons more then pay for their selves. I sell eggs and birds. On avarge I get 20.00 a week.
I plan to expand into coturnix this summer. Then I hope to get a few pairs of one of the fancy breeds I still have not made up my mind on which one. Humm maybe I will start a thread on that.

Well I'm making money but I got something that is working with not much effort. But I think I still would do it for the self factor even if I wasn't making some money. Grow it breed it eat it and start over. I would suggest Craigslist and find some Asian market to sell to or better yet Health Food Store.

PA doesnt sell coturnix well sadly (on craigslist or any other for sale site). My friend is selling coturnix quails and she's only sold like 30 of her hundreds she has...

so it honestly goes by area sadly. I wish they did sell as well here in PA as they do in Ohio and California i hear!

Is there a restruant you could team up with (a friend runs a chic bistro in town that may want to buy some later off me)?

Or get listed on local harvest?

A food co-op you could sell eggs or meat to?
