I am fed up with people ignorant of the facts saying turkeys are dumb. They really aren't. Ask any one who spends time hunting or raising them. Wild turkeys are EXTREMELY hard to kill. Even though domestic ones have been breed to meet certain requirements, they havent been "dumbed down." They are very instinctive birds. I REALLY wish people would get the facts...anyone else?

I agree! I get so tired of hearing "Turkeys are so stupid!" I've raised and rehabbed several wild turkeys now (I'm a wildlife rehabber), and I'm always amazed at how clever, amazing, and powerful they are. They're beautiful animals, and definitely not "stupid." I don't have much experience with domestic turkeys at this point, but I've heard they make wonderful pets and I want to get some Royal Palms someday.

I agree but IMO they arent as smart as chickens when they are young and as adults i think that chicks catch on much faster. But yes they are NOT dumb but not the wisest poultry out there

Problem is people try to attribute humane traits to animals and expect animals to act accordingly. Animals have instincts people have no knowledge of. My turkeys like to roost in the open. I know it's dangerous but, that is just a trait built into them and I get frutrated because every evening I have to heard them back into their coop. They're not being stupid it's just something built into them.

imo i think my 3 bbb hens are smarter then all my chickens. they follow me when i want them to. know where the feed is keep. and if i hold up the feed bubket they will come right to it. on the other hand my chickens dont like the feed bucket if i set it down with food in it they walk away. can't get any of the chickens to follow me. and pretty sure they havnt figured out that the big 55 gal barrel has the feed in it.

Yeah but in California the turkeys die from staring at the sun and sunburn. There are also rumors that some of the larger Toms do steroids.

Lol, I just had to blow dry 3 little ones that got caught in the rain (it was a real bad blowing rain). I was not their faught but mine. They and their mom have now been moved. I still think they are not dumb.
