Ugly feet and legs!

How did you son manage to overlook her feet & legs? They look horrible and swollen. I would think she needs an antibiotic from the vet, as well as topical ointment . Poor girl.

Very good question! I know they were free range but they went into the coop at night. I would think someone would have noticed how bad they are. Maybe I did because I sit in the coop-yard with them. I want them to get used to me.

If is it those mite things the idea is to apply enough vaseline to block the air getting to them so that they can't breath, so if you try that keep a good thick layer on.

Yes those are definitely leg scale mites. Soaking the legs in warm Epsom salts, applying Vaseline will over time take care of this. Coat the legs well and rub the Vaseline in well to smoother the mites. This will take months to heal. Don't pick at the scabs and let the fall off naturally. And yes, a round of Penicillin or Amoxicillin will help with any bone infection. No doubt the mites have burrowed into the leg bones and can cause infection and even death.

The standard dose for amoxicillin is 250 mg twice daily for 5 to 7 days. You can get it in the form of fishmox or aquamox. Look for fish antibiotics online. If you need more advice, please consider starting a thread in the ER Forum. Good luck.
