Well my chicken math starts like this
yippiechickie.gif
, only suposed to get 4 hens (took about a yr of begging to get that), I bought 2 hens and 2 roosters at auction, later that week I got 5 hens and 2 guineas from CL= 9 chickens and 2 guineas. well 1 guinea flew the coop and sold 1 rooster (bought as a believed hen), next auction got 2 hens and sold 1, = 9 chickens 1 guinea, next auction sold 1 guinea and 1 hen, bought 1 hen. 9 chickens total now a little more than the original 4 agreed upon. next auction bout 7 chickens all believed to be hens. Auction was flooded with nearly 300 birds so prices hit bottom, so I got them a $2 a piece. so thats 16 chickens, lost one to dog, next auction sold 4 hens and bought 1 hen w/ 5 bitties

, and a young pullet, 17 chickens all together now. This past thurs, I noticed one of my Ameracauna's is in fact a rooster and he has 1 little hen hanging about with him. So left for auction this am no plans AT ALL to buy birds. I work for the auction every week showing the birds on the floor for the bidders so kinda have to go. well.... I ended up buying myself a GORGEOUS Show Bantam, Silver Laced Wyandotte raised as a serious PET by the name of "Vanna White", with full intention of her becomeing another hen for my 2nd in command roo. (kinda my excuse you might say

) My flock at home is a barnyard mix including game X's, 1 polish, ameracauna's, EE's, barred rock, and my big Lemon Blue Cochin Roo. She would be my ONLY Bantam. So was kinda concered with her size mixing in. Well I got home after a long day at auction to find one of my LF EE's "Sophie" succombed to the heat (103F today) even with the fans ect.

Worried over my new little "Vanna White" I brought her inside, which by the way she is very happy sitting on my TV stand watching "Crossing Jordan" currently, Technically the chicken math has not changed still 17 including my bitties w/mama. Problem is 1 has moved into the house and hubby doesn't know she is inside yet, so hopefully I wont have to sleep in my coop with my girls tonight. 4 hens for a few eggs turned into 17 chickens very very fast

. Loving all my birds though, each one is different and spoiled rotten. will post V W 's TV watching pics soon! Wish me luck! Better go cook some brownies real fast before hubby gets home (hit the stomach before the brain

That is totally adorable! How did your husband take it? I had one of my Silkies in for a few nights and she loved the tellie too...just sat on my lap and watched. My husband wasn't thrilled, and despite ' no more chickens' he arranged for her to have two friends!
Your girl is very pretty too!

VW did all the work, she is a VERY affectionate little bird! Our parrot passed away a year ago in my arms and we had an agreement no more indoor birds due to emotional attachments. Chickens are just outdoor livestock not really cuddly pets. But Mrs. VW is very much a sweetie pie and he has taken too her quite nicely. LOL now the rule is if she gets too hot she comes in, If she is out Beethoven has to be locked up (LF Cochin Roo) because he will squish her

All my chickens are used to people but VW is the only one who will seek out your lap and snuggle. I have 3 others that will coo and purr when you hold them and pet them but it takes effort to catch them first. Beethoven rides in the car to town when we make trips to get fast food ect. He even walks through the feed store LOL but definitly does not like to be held. So I do consider my birds Part-time pets but I do see them as livestock as well realizing that they will come and go when they get to a point they aren't laying, or natural predation/old age takes over. VW on the other hand is strictly a PET now, if she lays eggs or not

Sweetest chicken I have ever met.

My chicken math kinda works like yours. I have about 60 hens and 1 roo and I'm looking at what I want to buy in the fall so I can get a 2nd coop built. Vanna is a lovely young lady! My husband had no interest at all in the chickens when I first got them. Now, 3 years later, he picks them up on his own and cuddles them out in the yard, Made improvements because the coop didn't have enough air flow, worries that they're too hot/cold, not getting enough calcium, etc. LOL! He'd even let me have one in the house if I wanted, but I have 3 dogs that would make dinner out of any poor chicken I brought in the house! They have a way about them, don't they?
