I recently bought 2 black australorp chicks. They were on sale last April 14 but we only bought them on 17 so they‘re probably 2+ weeks old now. Theres a lot of signs that both of them are roo’s but i really wanted one to be a pullet. What do you think they are? I labeled them as Chick 1 and Chick 2 in the pics.

chick 2 has a bigger comb than chick 1 but chick 1 is is bigger in size than chick 2. The only thing that is giving me hope is that chick 1 is growing tail feathers faster than chick 2

Thank you to everyone who replied. I guess we’ll see in a month then. I just wanted some opinions because im planning to purchase another chick if the two really end up being roos.

It's my first time with an australorp, and my little one popped (to me) a big comb right away like your chick #1. But it hasn't grown significantly or reddened (unfortunately like chick #2) since then - she's about to be five weeks old.

So hoping - for both of us - that chick #1 stays on what seems to be a pullet track.

But sounds like you've definitely got one cockerel on your hands. And if you're thinking of getting more chicks to replace him, it would probably be better to do that now while they can still be more easily integrated to each other than in a month (unsolicited advice).

Update: theyre now a month old. What do y’all guess now?
the other one is definitely a rooster and its really funny because he’s trying to crow every morning at such an early age🤣
