Uh oh, now I've done it!

I had been planning on setting some duck eggs in the near future but my ducks went on a laying strike so I bid on a dozen assorted chicken eggs on ebay yesterday and won the auction. I was really excited so I went to get the incubator out (never used it before so it was very exciting) and when I was carrying I stepped on a pillow that wasn't where it should have been. I slid a bit and in order to prevent a belly flop (I'm 7 months pregnant so that would not have been good) I let go of the bator and broke it into several pieces when it hit the floor. I am so upset because now I have these eggs coming and nowhere to put them plus that means no chicks or ducks this spring/summer, boo.

Me and my darn clumsiness.


ETA: The ebay lady let me cancel the bid so I won't be needing the incubator after all. I'm bummed about not hatching any ducks but dh agreed to let me buy a couple of ducklings over the summer after the new baby gets here...yay!

So sorry about your accident. I'd be heartbroken!!! I have several broody hens if you are anywhere near me. (I'm totally assuming you can hatch duck eggs that way. )

Oh dear!! Don't cancel the order. Go on to the coop pages and you will see a link to the incubator pages. You can make one pretty quickly out of a cooler or styrofoam box. Use the parts from the broken up bator. Lots of us have made these and they work great!!

Thats what I plan on doing. I have an old large igloo icechest(lid Broken off) I am going to use the LG parts and maybe add a bigger heater but i have been looking at the Bator pages. I know I can do it. It doesn't look hard. You can prolly do it too. Check out the home made bator pages. Their really great and helpful.

What kind and how did the bator break? If you have a styrofoam one and just the foam broke you should be able to repair it with wood glue, just do not use any cyanoacralate (sp?) glue, i.e. super glue because it will dissolve the foam. It is pretty cool thing to do if you have extra super glue and a foam plate or cup.

I hope you are able to piece the incubator back together. I wonder if ducktape would work... I've seen it at craft stores in some really snazzy new colors.

First! Don't panic!!

Third, relax, put together your shopping list, and get out to the hardware store to get your components. You can do this! And it's OK for the eggs to be kept for a few days in a cool place while you put together your home made bator! Just try to get them in there as soon as is humanly possible.

The construction adhesives that come in caulk-type tubes are very good to use with styrofoam. Just go ahead and glue your 'bator back together, so it can have a few days for the glue curing smell to fade. The Liquid NAils type glues put out ammonia when drying.

Yes!! Get an incubator!!! But first I must warn you, if you do, soon ONE wont be enough.

Oh and you arent clumsy, accidents happen.
