When I moved to my rental home, I was not given a copy of the local laws. My neighbors said chickens were fine. The city laws said chickens were fine. I just found the neighborhood laws. They say no poultry! My close neighbors don't mind the birds, but another neighbor called the police about someone's unleashed dog. I am super concerned that I will have to get rid of the birds. I have a place I could take them, but I am attached to my girls. I have no known roos. If I had one, I would get a no-crow collar or re-home him. I am worried that someone will call the police or whoever keeps tabs on this without trying to work out a compromise with me. I do my best to keep everything clean, and the girls are only super loud during their egg songs. I use flytraps to keep the flies down. What should I do?!?

I am assuming that chicken keeping in the area is allowed by city ordinances, but an HOA has a rule against keeping chickens in your particular area. If you get caught you will have no choice. You will have to rehome the birds. Even if you had the money to hire a lawyer to fight the HOA, the HOA would still win and you would still need to rehome the birds.

Let it ride until someone complains. 1st offenses are usually warnings. Just know that the day MAY come when you'll have to say goodbye.

Use the time you have to build a great relationship with your neighbors. Continue being a good chicken keeper and educate and encourage them to become chicken keepers themselves. If you can rally enough support, maybe you can get the HOA to change the rules.

Worth a shot.
