Bought my very first chickens about 4 months ago, Bought all hens, for layng. One that my daughter named 'Squatch (we have a family joke about Sasquatch) has gotten much bigger than the others, and is clearly on top of the pecking order. This morning 'Squatch very cleary articulated "Cock-a-doodle-do". I guess it's good that it wasn't Penelope or Petunia that turned into a boy.

If you are in a position to keep him, you should. The flocks seem much happier with a roo around.

Fortunately, we are. We have 100 acres and they are free ranging quite nicely. Although we didn't plan it this way it was kind of a nice surprise (explains a lot of things, lol) and they are far away enough from the house so that hopefully he won't keep us or anyone else up at night. My daughter is thrilled, she wants babies :). I will have to research that extensivey before considering it, and then it wouldn't be until next year.

Same thing happened to me!! I bought 3 Buff Orpingtons and 3 Reds from TSC the end of March. One BO died the day after we got them. So now I only have 2. Well all along I have been calling them Ladies. Well one of the BO's kept getting bigger and bigger. My dad said he thought it was a roo. I said no Dad, they are all girls. Well I was walking across the field from my parents place back to my place on 6/28 when the "lady" let out a Cock-a-doodle-do!! I just yelled, He crowed!!

Yep, now I have 4 ladies and 1 very happy roo.

Heehee! 'Squatch!! -now that's a mighty fine rooster name!!! Penelope or Petunia just wouldn't be fittin'.
Unfortunately, our "Miss Babsie" belted out a crow one morning...

Now, he's just Babsie (and a wonderful part of our flock).

Too funny! I'm glad I'm not the only one! Not the first time for me...once my husband brought home a kitten and I asked if it was male or female. he said he thought it was a male. So we ended up with a kitten named Henry that went into heat :). This does mean less eggs than we were counting on, but I am happy, expecially happy it was 'Squatch!.

awwwww poor little 'girl'... with a name like Squatch it HAD to be a boy anyway!!!!

I had that happen to me in 2010 with my 'girls' out of the pullett bin at TSC too. It ended up the best thing of my life. I dont know what I would have done without 'Superbird aka 'Bird. He watches over the rest of his girls so good. I think he would die for them if needed.

I'm glad to hear that! Actually, now that he has 'voiced' that he is All Man, we've taken a closer look and feel kind of silly. He looks just like the roo on the Cornflakes box, how could we have ever doubted his manhood?

I wish I could have a rooster but I live within city limits and they are not allowed(and everyone knows why). I went to a store that sold chicks and there was one that got there and was a roo. The guy there was showing us by puting his hand in. All the chicks scattered except for this one who stood its ground and pecked the man's finger. Pecking order style, the man tapped it's head. They went back and forth somewhere from 20 to 30 times. It was the funniest thing ever just to watch the two go back and forth!
