Uh-oh

I am hard wired to waken at 5:12 each morning; problem is, my understanding is that they tend to crow 24/7. I am also a bit concerned he will be aggressive when he gets older. Right now we are all gettig along fine -- cats, dog, humans, chickens -- but I hear they can get aggressive later. I am reading up on how to make sure he knows who is boss.

I was at a store that sold chicks and there was one that was a roo they thought. Here's what happened.

The guy put his hand in the cage and all the chicks scattered save this one that stood its ground and pecked the guy's finger. Pecking order style, the guy tapped it on the head. The chick pecked his finger. The guy tapped it. They went back and forth about twenty times. It was the funniest thing ever to just watch.

I have heard that if there is a roo chick mixed in, the hens wil scatter while the roo will stand it's ground. Too funny!

I love having roosters around and hearing them crow. Unless you are building the coop right near the bedrooms, I don't think it should be too noisy. Keep in mind, if you hatch out chicks next year then you will have to figure out if you want to keep more roosters. Fortunately the younger roosters usually accept the oldest rooster as boss.

I agree,I think I'm going to like it. I don't know about chicks. As fun as it would be, I worry about roosters. If they did not get along I would have to find homes for them and the research I have done makes it look difficult, like the poor roos are destined to all be on a dinner plate. From some of the stories I have seen I am already worried about this one turning aggressive when he gets a bit older, I love him, so I hope it doesn't happen!
