Could you attach a polytunnel to the barn to give them more room if needed? That's what we've done. I would say it sounds like your cockerel is another issue though, as sad as it can be to face that.
We managed to enclose a small tree inside the polytunnel as well and plan to add woodchips to the floor and then some other things to make it more entertaining for them. Their indoor space was already sufficient for them by welfare standards but I feel happier knowing they have the extra space and light of the tunnel.
I do feel sad for them being shut in. It sounds great if yours have barn space though and perhaps you can lure them in with something tasty. I expect they'll get used to it in due course and perhaps it'll be a good time to get them more used to you.
