Anyone have experience with this? This is what I believe the 3 new quail brought to my others. 2 have died with a third looking poorly today. After this death, I'll have 9 birds left. Has anyone treated this successfully? Would it make more sense for me to cull and begin again? Thanks for any advice and yes, lesson learned here--no adult birds from feed stores.

if you're up to it, if one dies, if you arent squemish, open up it's tummy and look at it's liver. If theres spots on it, then yes it's more than likely enteritis. I had sucessfully treated this in newborn rabbits, (only lost one) the challenge is keeping them hydrated when they keep being so sick. I'd deffinatly offer them hydrating liquids and if they aren't willing to drink it might want to force them to (dip beak then lift beak up some untili they swallow). It's a big fight to cure but it can be done

Thank you for the info. I have the one bird that appears too far gone to save, but the other 9 appear healthy and active, still laying, eating, and drinking. Do I need to treat them for it or add bacitracin to their food/water as a preventative? Is it pretty safe to assume they all have it? Once I've medicated them and hopefully not lost any more, is it safe to add new birds to them? Will the new birds become ill because these birds are now carriers? (The newbies are birds we hatched--no UE!) If we decide to cull them, are they safe to process for the freezer?

You could try a low dose antibiotic to prevent UE, Duramycin is cheap. One teaspoon to a gallon will make your life a WHOLE lot easier. Tried and true! Saved a whole barn of rabbits with it, and it works the same with chickens!

Thank you! I called my local feed store and they have Duramycin, so off we go! I think everyone will be getting a dose since the quail are housed in the center of the bird yard with chickens around (but not in with) them.

Water is now medicated, so hopefully we'll not lose any more birds. This was my first solo cull and it went well. I've always had my husband to help me in situations like these, but he's in PA, so this one I did by myself. *sigh* I hope we won't have to do any more for a long time!

I'm pretty sure Duramycin is the same thing as Terramycin (tetracycline etc) which yes that's also what i used for the rabbit kits, and I also offered a probitotic

(plain yogurt will work for that)

eta: try to keep their bums clean as well if you can if they get pasty butt a blocked up vent can kill them too (i know frusterating) LOL

I'll give them a bowl of yogurt in the morning. Thanks for the info! None of the remaining 9 birds are showing any signs of illness, so hopefully they'll make it.

that's great to hear! Keep us updated!
