Well, it's April now and this is the time of year I get the craving to build a better coop, hatch eggs, buy breeds I don't have. Obviously I'm not expecting anyone here to tell me to take up needlework instead, but I'm hopeful that there are a few of you out there who understand what my family thinks is crazy.
I know I have enough on my plate. I started eight years ago with a few chicks from the feed store that moved into a 4x6 section of the wood shed and now I'm up to two 10x12 coops with 18 hens and a roo in each along with a 4x4 mini coop that houses a couple hens that just couldn't get along with the rest. I can't put a sign in my yard to advertise so after dinner any time the weather allows I take the kids for a walk and sell or give away eggs to the neighbors along the way. I consider myself lucky because I usually cover the feed bill this way and as a bonus I can say I know all my neighbors really well.
Last year at this time I was perfecting my incubator skills, only to be shown up by my buff orpington. I got to 96% and she had 100%. The end result was the difficult process of finding homes for lots of mutts and roos. Even signs like "free to good crockpot" didn't seem to help.
Anyway, I'm here now, I've been lurking and learning for a long time. I would build another coop if I could get my hands on some white orpingtons. Don't tell my husband that slipped out.
I'm very impressed by the contents of the emergencies section. Wow. Collectively you all know a heck of a lot more than my vet.
Nice to meet you all!
