Are the alerts for new posts or for things like likes and mentions? I don't think you can avoid the latter two.
It's been 40 mins since the last. Alerts were for everything going on on that thread. Every reply, post. I just didn't want to be associated with the under tone displayed. I clicked un watch but was being bombarded with alert pop ups.
Actual you can avoid those too.
Check out the settings here:

I can't find it on the list.. it is pages long. I'm giving up. Spending so much effort on such a minor issue.
Never the less, I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to help me. You are a sweet person. I thank you. I'm sure the thread will fizzle out eventually.
No worries. I'll just ignore the alerts for a while.

If you recently got an alert for said thread it will most likely be on the first page of your watched threads list.

Here is my hypothesis: When you choose to "unwatch" a thread, it takes a short while for the system program to implement your request. I am sure the said thread is still active, although I don't wish to go back and associate myself w/it. I haven't received an alert on said thread since 1 P.M.-ish.
So I'm chalking that one up on- it's not an instant un-follow once upon requesting.
