Unbelieveably, chicks are hatching! Olive Eggers!

That is cool so many people are working on olive eggers! It is harder than it looks to get the beards, pea combs and right color all on the same bird in one generation. I think it will take me a year or more to set my barred gene along with the pea comb and beards. That's okay, I got time...
How many you got left to hatch tonight?

Honestly--the eggs are coming up fertile most of the time...the free-ranging flock consists of Marans, Buff Orp, and EE roos, and the girls are EE, Buff Orp, and Marans.

I'm happy to pull the blue eggs and share them, but there's no guarantee as to who the daddy will be. Right now, we suspect that Skee-Lo the BO is getting most of the action, with Maurice the Marans closing the gap. We don't think the EE roo gets much of a chance with the ladies.

yes yes yes i just got my very own hovabator 1588 with auto fan and turner and all that jaz and i cant wait to put it to work !!!

Maybe in the spring, I'll make a more concerted effort, because I do love the olive eggs. Interestingly, the lightest colored chick to hatch so far, hatched from an egg that is already quite a nice olive color. One of my EE hens lays a perfect olive-drab egg.

There are about 10 more eggs in the incubator, but I have no idea if any of the rest are viable. I have a TERRIBLE hatching average, and these eggs have been dying off all along the way, especially during the final week. I had a Buff Orp chick pip, then languish for two days before finally dying today.

I'm going to leave everything as is through tomorrow, before I start chucking eggs. I'm prepared to have only these three this time.

We have a new Genesis coming soon (it's our Christmas present to each other), and we're hoping it will improve our hatch rate.
