Uncared For Welsummers

Sorry to hear about your poor welsummers. I hope they manage to come out of it and end up as beautiful and healthy as they should be.
Good luck,

I encourage you to make a complaint with the humane authorities in the area this person lives in. It certainly sounds like they were not receiving even the basics of care. If nothing else, a visit from a humane officer may make the fool realize that eyes are on him.
I hope things go better with them; I'm sure that once they settle a bit more, you will start seeing more normal behavior. Poor things.

Ought to be flogged and tarred and feathered for putting all of his chickens that way. Poor things!

REPORT him and you will do yourself a favor and the chickens a favor too.

I sure am glad that these 5 will no longer have to live in such poor conditions. What did he say when you picked them up? Surely he had to know you would have this opinion of him. I think once you care for them and make sure they don't have any diseases, they will be fine. I would make a report and I'd make sure I never did budsiness with him again!!

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. My thoughts are his chickens are probably better kept then battery chickens, and depending on the type of area you live in, the authorities would/could do nothing. Livestock are often kept in appalling conditions, while being fully within the law. I suspect reporting this person would do nothing. In all likelyhood, he is within the law.

I'm glad you got the those birds and that they will have a better life.

Heidi, I read your post to my DH and asked what he would do. He said and I quote, "I would put them down, be sure everything they touched, including myself, was disinfected and tell who exactly sold you the sick birds and report him."
Obviously, if anyone asks you, you should tell him who sold you those birds to prevent anyone else going through what you're going through. The man should not be called a breeder, by any stretch. I re-read your original post and the entire thread. I know what I told you in my email, but considering the conditions these birds were obviously kept in, I'm not sure I would ever feel comfortable putting them into my flock, no matter how much better they get; not unless you can confirm with a vet that they have nothing contagious, a long-shot at best, I'd say. I'm so sorry. You can put off your decision a few days; no need to do anything immediately. If you do cull them, be sure you disinfect any ground they've been on as well as equipment they've touched or breathed on.
After all the effort I put into keeping my birds healthy and clean and someone mistreats them and passes himself off as a breeder....GRRRRRR....disgusting.
Even with my own birds, who have never had any respiratory illness to my knowledge, I would advise someone to quarantine them after purchase. I would not be offended in the least-it's good animal husbandry to do so.

If he sells birds and eggs on Eggbid, you can put a negative feedback on him about the birds condition. However he has alot of positive feedbacks so he may be great in packaging but fertility is questionable since some of the feedback does indicate 50% fertility.

So for starters, give a negative feedback if you are not happy with the situation and inform buyers about it and then they can decide whether or not to buy his eggs or birds.

Wow, you guys!!! I, too am speechless!!! I purchased eggs from him. Out of 24, 22 were fertile/17 hatched. The birds are lovely and friendly. When I sit in my coop, three of those hens will come over to me, hop on my leg and sit there to be petted like a cat. They are very sweet and so far none of the roos are mean. I did not see his chicks but I did see some of his adult breeders. Not the way I would want to keep my birds but my birds are my pets and my standards are different. You all have changed my opioion, now. And I'm certainly not defending the situation but I just wanted to say that I was happy with our outcome. I was a different experience from yours.
