Unclaimed chicks at Post Office?

OMG!

How kind of you to come to the aid of the chicks. And how diligent of the PO employee to think fast and find care for the surviving chicks.

It's a bit of Russian Roulette at my post office. I always go in the day before my chicks are scheduled to arrive and make sure they have all my phone contacts and will call me at the first peep of the box. Sometimes I get an animal lover who will make it their mandate to watch for the chicks and take charge of the delivery. Sometimes I get some jaundiced guy who tells me "so you think you're the first person we've ever gotten chicks for?". But, happily, I haven't lost one yet!

Hope they get to their intended home but, in the meantime, you and your post office are TOPS!!!

PS I'm wondering how this could even happen. My Pet Chick always notifies me of the scheduled shipping date and sends a reminder when they're shipped. I suppose emergencies come up and someone might have to leave town suddenly. But a cell phone should reach them wherever they may be to make some kind of acknowledgment and arrangements...

As to how it could happen, it's sad to hear the post office has had this experience before with this hatchery/shipper and buyer. You'd hope that hatcheries could/would "black list' some buyers if this happens repeatedly. Otherwise, a typo in the email address, or bad communication or poorly designed web site could make it possible, even easy, for the chicks to arrive at the wrong time. So happy to hear that this one had a happy ending, thanks to a good samaritan in the right place at the right time, and dedicated postal employees.

To the buyer's credit, it was not their fault. This was a replacement order for when their order was miss-sent last year. The shipper never confirmed with the buyer when, exactly, the chick's would ship.

I bet something was off on the label, address, name..etc.
Is the P.O sure the person and address on the box exsist?
No, the label was correct. The people were correct. The chicks were correct. The shipping date was NOT correct. The shipper made the mistake, and admitted to making the mistake.
At least everything worked out mostly ok. After 2 full days in a shipping box and air conditioned buildings, I do feel awful about how many chick's didn't make it. Only 10 of 25 survived.

I just wanted to add my gratitude to the long list! I think many of us would have done the same, although I wouldn’t have spare brooders around! The post office in my little town is similar. I get a hello by name just for opening my PO Box - she knows who is who! If something comes addressed to my fiancé at our street address, she pops it into my PO Box. If something comes addressed to me in the next town over, that postal worker drops it off at his mom’s house. (These two towns have delivery crossed on some roads.)

I’m glad your PO is like this - saved 10 chickies!

I'm grateful for to the kind people who work at the post office that intervene and able to save some of the chicks. When I ordered my chicks back in January they were rescheduled once .When they did ship them I wasn't given a tracking number or notified until late that night (11:00 pm) 9 hours later they were at the post office waiting to be picked up.When I got home with my chicks the hatchery sent an email saying I should expect them to arrive in 24 hrs. Its no wonder these chicks have no one waiting for them when the hatcheries use private breeders to fill their orders and ship them. They don't even know when "their" chicks are shipped because they aren't :ththeir" chicks.
