Hello again my feathered friend fanatics.

My little duckling is now 4 weeks old and has outgrown the pen I have for it inside. She is starting to feather. I have set up a hutch outside with a heat lamp. Do you think she will be alright.

I’ve attached a picture to show you all how big she is getting. Amazing little duckling.

Is she a single duck? If yes you cannot just put her outside by herself, she would feel terribly lonely and abandoned!
The colder weather would not be my concern, i live in WV and we can still drop down to freezing overnight, however my Spring Ducklings moved out of the Garage into their outside house two weeks ago, at an age of five weeks. The house was protected from the cold winds and they had an infrared lamp and a heat-pad. After just 1½ weeks in that house they wanted out and join the grown-ups so bad, i let them loose. Since then they sleep in the big duck-house, still have their infrared lamp but use it rarely.

Start taking her outside on field trips during the day, at the warmest bit of the day. Once she stops being active and/or shivers, it's time to come back inside. She will quickly be able to stay outdoors longer and longer and soon may only sleep indoors at night. Once she has all her adult feathers she will be able to regulate her body temperature much better and will be able to stay out all the time with proper shelter.

She's sweet.. what is her name? Make sure nothing can reach through the wire or dig up under it. Also if windy help shield her from wind and or rain and such. Pending on where you are even full sun can be harsh sometimes. Here in AZ we are already 70's and 80's. Well that's my 2 cents.. congrats on your baby duck.

You don't say where you are but I'm not sure I'd put her outside at night just yet unless you're in Florida or someplace warm. Maybe try to bring her out a bit during the day and see how she does. She's not fully feathered yet so I don't think she will be able to regulate her body temperature.
