I have two different bantam roosters. One is a Golden Sebright and the other is a Sussex Speckled. The Golden will try to attack my husband and son. The Sussex will try to attack me. Today when I went out to let my chickens out of their coop I tried to pet one of my Frizzles and the Sussex pecked at me so I swatted him. Did I do the right thing?

You sure did. I had a RIR roo and I was always showing him who the Alpha mail was. It was me. He would go after my grandchildren until he saw me coming then he would stop. I had to catch him and hold him all the time I was getting my eggs. Then I held him until he stopped squalking. (is that how you spell it?). HE learned after a while. Don't back down. I also used a squirt gun on him, he didn't like that.

When I see one of the rooster jumping on my hens I knock them off too. Also I will get a hand full of feed and let my girls eat and not the roos. Is this another way to show the roos who is boss?

Agree - you have to show him who signs the paychecks! When our roo becomes Mr. Cranky Pants I pick him up and make him look me in the eye and have a good boss to employer chat! Do that again and you are so fired - and I'm not talking unemployment I mean the spit on the BBQ.

So what I should do is pick up my girls and let them know that they are mine and pick the roos up just to let them know that I am the BIG BOSS of the Chick Condo?

I would definitely do something if my roosters started attacking me, and they usually end up in a pot.

But I don't get why you bother roosters who get on hens...isn't that what they're supposed to do? I never bother roosters when they're courting hens.

As to food, usually the rooster finds food and calls over his harem. Roosters take care of their hens.

But aggressive roosters need to be culled, disciplined or submitted to lots of petting until they behave (I've done this a few times and they've turned out to be nice roosters, but when it doesn't work, I put them in the oven.

Well one time a rooster kept attacking me, and I clocked him with a baseball and threw a net over him and kept him there for about an hour. Apparently this "time out" worked because he was an angel ever since.

Then I had a rooster who flew on my head from the rafters, and the next time I saw him, I had him sit in my lap and petting him and fed him. He turned out to be really nice too.

But those were the only two I did that with. The other ones attacked visitors and kids and I put those in the freezer. I probably could have done the same with them but roosters are usually destined for the freezer here unless I really like them.

My current two adult roosters are very good. One is very friendly and the other is real shy.

As to their interaction with the girls, I think you misunderstand them. The roosters jumping on the hens is trying to mate with them. I usually leave them alone. When they're young, they can be a bit clumsy and pull out the feathers on the hen's back, neck or head, but they outgrew that for me. I don't have one hen without feathers and right now I have two adults and two teenage roosters. Yes that's too many, but all is peaceful in the jungle right now, so it's okay.

Only ONCE did my RIR rooster Rusty tried to attack me. Just ONCE. The one time that he did he found himself halfway across the coop with his red rear end a'hurting.

He's not to crazy about me picking up but he knows not to try bite me.

All of my roosters that I've had over the years learned really quick not to bite the hand that feeds them or they might find their rear ends a'hurting.

When I was a kid we had big aggressive Leghorn rooster, Rocky, who would come after anyone in the yard, spike-first. I began filing down the points with my dad's rasp while holding him upside down in my lap.

His wives would come by as I filed and google at him in wonder. He attacked much less often, and when he did the damage was minimized.

Love this forum!
