I had two roosters raised together. They were noisy and harassed the hens beyond mating. Got rid of one. Much quieter now.
Even so, one rooster is too much for 4 hens. Got 5 more. Hens are not so harried from mating.
Hope all the feathers return after this year's molt.
Although roosters don't contribute to laying eggs, they are interesting to observe in the role of a complete flock. Mine watches when the chickens are out foraging, he calls to the hens when he finds interesting things to eat, he calls then in at night to return to the coop and run.
There will soon be a law here prohibiting roosters, but until then....
