I have noticed that several of my hens feel too thin. Their keel bone is pointed and protruding more than what feels normal. I have realized this seems to be happening to the girls that rank at the bottom of the pecking order. Is it possible that they are not getting to eat due to being lower ranked? I keep the 25 pound feeder full at all times and they also free range. They do tend to empty the feeder by digging the food out while eating, but I have something to catch the lost food so all I do is pour it back in the top. Might I need to get a second feeder? I only have 19 birds.

It is possible that the dominant birds are guarding the feeders. It might be a good idea to add a second feeder.

What breeds are they, and have you actually weighed them? Most folks have no idea how the breast of a healthy layer feels, all my hens have sharp keel bones. I suggest weighing them and comparing to the standard weights for the breed before getting too excited.

They are mostly Orpingtons. I know the weight standards. I have not weighed the birds since the beginning of spring for their deworming. I just know that some feel significantly thinner than others. I have seen the ranking when it comes to eating. I have seen the more in charge ladies pecking lower ranked girls away when eating. I figured they would still be eating when it was their turn, but not sure. I am glad that sharp keel bones can be the norm. I was getting worried.

I have seen some birds peck other away when feeding. I just figured it was normal for lower ranked birds to have to wait their turn. Maybe they are guarding more than I thought. I am going to try getting a second feeder. Thanks!
