Hey there! So, I had somebody stop by my house today asking if I wanted a couple of roosters. This is the kind of small town I live in, so it's not overly strange...although I'm still getting use to it being a city girl. I ask what kind and he says "I don't know, a Rhode Island Red and some fancies". I told him just to bring them over. Worst case I end up with a couple of stew birds. I was actually just on Craigslist looking for a rooster an hour before he showed up.
So he shows up with not 2 roosters but 3 roos and 5 hens. All bantams. I have a standard size flock and a single silkie roo I had planned to get rid of/or eat as he's not super tiny. So I have a few questions.
What breeds are these itty bitty birds? I can try to get better pix tomorrow it's dark and I didn't want to stress them too much.
Can they be integrated into a standard size flock or do I need to make them a separate pen? My birds are actually all very sweet and very welcoming of new comers. I actually have a couple who are drawn to any newbies and will hang out with them and show them the ropes. BUT I still don't know if it's a really bad idea? My birds free range 2 acres generally all day long (Cornish x, layers of all ages, muscovies, ducks, and a turkey all out together without incident). I'd feel bad having to keep these ones in a pen while everybody gets to go out.
My daughter plans on showing 4H with birds next fall. I actually purchased our first show bred bird this past weekend as we start to move partially away from the mixes. Please tell me that any of these can be used, because honestly I don't know what else to do with them. They're adorable, but everybody here has to earn their keep in one way or another.
So now the birds...
This is the group of them. The light colored ones I didn't get any individual pictures of. They look like mini americauna with fluffy toes to me. Americauna/Cochins? Or is this an actual breed?
There's this one who kept tucking her darker tail so I tried showing it...in the dark lol. She reminds me of my standard Welsummer and olive egger who's Welsummer/Ameracauna. She has the blue legs.
Don't mind my horrific face in the photo..my kid doesn't know how to focus on a bird it looks like. He has a rose comb
And the last guy
