Hi, all! In January, 2021 I was asked to take over tending a flock of chickens at a church. It's a long story but it's been a totally unexpected life adventure. There are 20 chickens (which is a lot) on a property that is about an acre. We don't generally let them free range, but they have a nice space and are occasionally allowed to escape to the garden at large. Twelve are Leghorns and the rest are various breeds. I work in IT, so the last thing I ever thought is that I would be taking care of chickens...and loving it!

I've been gleaning information from the BYC website for a year now. The church just went through a cycle of wanting to undo their decision to have chickens on property and I just won the battle to not remove them. This is their home and - as so many others have said - I found that they are each unique and entertaining, and they offer so much more than just the value of their eggs.

One of the issues is that they're illegal in my town - that's the Town of Hempstead, Long Island, NY. I finally decided to join the community chat because I was looking for information about legalization - or penalties for failure to do so - and I saw an old post from someone else in my town.

I'm very grateful for the incredible wealth of information and experience in the BYC community!
