Hi, everyone. This is a sad post. I have a 10 week old EE pullet that I saved from sour crop when she was just a couple days old. When I went out to the grow out pen mid-morning, she was dead. I plan on doing a full necropsy tomorrow and adding more pics, but for now, I wanted to ask for opinions after you see her mouth. I was mostly worried she was attacked by a mink or something that would come back tonight, so I started examining the body. There was no blood in the coop. She does have missing feathers and a slight wound in her back that is just skin deep- it does not pierce the membrane beneath the skin into the muscle and there was no blood at all, so I wonder if the other birds in the pen did it after she had died. She was kind of under the feeder. Anyway, the only thing I could see from my external exam was that there was a lot of mucus in her mouth and under her tongue. Is this normal? I have not looked into a lot of chickens mouths, so I don't know. Ideas? She was not skinny and did not seem lethargic yesterday. She just died so unexpectedly... This was her location when I found her:
Here is her mouth:
Any ideas? I would like opinions so I can research what I should be looking for when I open her up tomorrow. For now, she is resting in my fridge.
