Sorry about the re pos..... I have started giving her her own salad in the corner....but if Lucy sees her she will chase her off. Lucy has laid all winter. So maybe thats part of the adjustment period, no eggs??

Giving them separated feeders is imo the best thing you can do.

Lucy is just showing she is the boss. In general the younger chickens are lower in the pecking order. But pecking is normal, its just to give instructions. Unless there is blood you should give it some time.

How old is the younger pullet?

What did you do on prevention for predators ?

Set it up so that you have two feeding stations, and when a bird is eating at one, she cannot see the other one at all. A piece of plywood, or a tote layer on its side, a cardboard box. Anything that the bird eating is completely out of view from the bird eating at the other station and vice versa.

Change generally interrupts the egg laying, and it is so frustrating. I too, am waiting.

Oh I believe it could be an older hen. My Lucy is just a year now. That was the other reason I was asking about eggs...maybe she is too old? I hear they stop producing as much around 2? It’s just the two of them, Lucy and Ingrid. As far as the predator he has been removed. It was my daughters rescue dog (chihuahua) that she found as a new puppy abandon. I would have NEVER believed it if we didn’t catch him in the pen with feathers in his mouth. He was an extremely timid dog! He dug under the pen. Anyway he was re-homed the next day to her friend.

What kind of breed is Ingrid?

Most hens will lay lots of eggs in the first 2 years and it decreases slowly after that. The winter stop is a bit longer. But many hens can lay a few eggs until they are about 8 years old. Only the hybrids stop earlier and rarely get that old.

I have 2 Dutch hens who are 5½ . They are not laying yet. Most hens lay an egg every other day now. Even 2 who are already 4½.

It depends on the age, the breed, the day length and there are individual differences. If Ingrid is old, maybe she will lay soon.

Oh dear! I'm so sorry to hear of your loss! I just started with 4 chicks, and that scares me! I can't help but feel like they will be petty chickens for me. I can't offer any advice, but just wanted to say sorry.

They are that close together- you are past the worst of it. Give it another month, they are really doing very well.

Hi Chicken friends....I am coming to y’all with a few questions... A week ago I lost one of my 2 hens to a very unfortunate accident and needless to say I was devastated! I started with 7 ended with 2 due to predators and being first time chicken owners. I almost gave up the last two but didn’t due to my husbands insistence on keeping them. In the end I’m glad he did. They were perfect! Now one is gone and I have a friend who is going to give me one of her hens and I need to know if it is best for them to be the same breed and since there is just going to be the two of them I can just put them together right? I have to say my Lucy who survived was the most timid of the two. I’m frightened for her. I don’t want her to suffer any more trauma.....TIA

I have 3, all different breeds. Old EE, mid age ameraucana, and a 1 yr black star. When I introduced the black star it was like hell had broke loose for about 3 days. The other 2 would pick on her and she would run and hide behind my leg like a little toddler. It took about 1 week ( and me staying out of the arguments) until they rearranged themselves. They are best of friends now but it was pretty touch and go for a bit. Unless you have a massive chicken and a tiny chicken where one could easily hurt the other I would say you should be alright. It wont be pretty- but it will work out fine.
