Unfortunate accident

As for the babies, always fun to keep them close for about a week, maybe two. By week two, they need to spend sometime outside in the sunshine and fresh air. People getting started in this hobby, tend to try and keep them safe and warm. So keep them in too small of confinement with a heat lamp.

Getting them outside, even for a couple of hours is good for them. And it will be good for the other chickens to be able to see them, and get used to them. The older chickens WILL NOT LIKE THEM, and will try to kill them at first.

They have to see them and get used to them. One way gates, outside shelter can really help get them into the flock. A multi-generational flock is the best flock, but it can be a trick to do so. In my opinion it is best to do it about 3-4 weeks. Otherwise you will need to keep them separate until full size birds.

So even though it’s winter and very cold (no snow to speak of) I should put them outside as baby chicks? I would need to build a lil pen next to my chicken run for the hens to be able to see the chicks. I can let them run bc we have a bird dog and now my sons dog (he was sent home from college) that is half coyote. BTW....still no eggs🤷🏻‍♀️Im thinking she is just an old hen 😅 her talons are all crooked like she has arthritis and her comb is very dull looking....I did reach out to the friend that gave her to me but I have not heard back yet...

Do you have a heat source for them out there?
Is you r coop big enough to section of a space with a wire mesh wall?
How cold?

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

It should not be an all or nothing at first. Pick a sunny day, a place protected from the wind, add a huddle box, and let them be there for an hour or so, next day a little longer. The next day a little longer yet.

You do need a way to confine them, just an outside pen. A cardboard box on the side, will give them shelter, a place to warm up.

When you bring them in, make sure you do have a heat source so they can get good and warm. And they will take a good nap, just like kids that play outside.

Don't take them out, leave them all day or in a blizzard or other horrible weather. But as soon as possible, a little time outside is good for them. Do protect them from your older chickens, but let them be seen.

Sounds good! I’m still waiting for the call that they have arrived at our local feed store. I do have a heat source, one above the coop where the current hens roost at night and one in the baby pen just waiting for them to arrive 😊 I did add my location! Appreciate you and all of your help ✌🏽🧡
