My chick pipped on day 23 and on day 24 (today) with some help, she has part of her shell removed. Right now she is what I can only describe as panting and has as a large air sac on what should be her back area. She is still not completely out of the shell and is wrapped in moist paper towels in the incubator with high humidity. Her blood vessels are mostly dried up but since this is my first time, I'm not 100% sure she is ready to come out. I feel like her predicament is my fault because I messed with the first two chicks during hatching and dropped the humidity and "shrink wrapped" her or dried up the membrane. Any ideas on what this sac is? It has her fuzz on it so it is definitely part of body. Should I help her out?

I forgot mention that at one point there was some frothing at the beak going on. I quickly cleaned that away so that she wouldn't suffocate. That has stopped but the "panting" is still going on. I am starting to think that the panting is causing the air sac but I have no idea why.

Yes i have read that over and over and over. I wish whoever wrote it was here to make sure what I am seeing is what they are looking for etc.

Ok thanks I will try to figure out how to do that

i don't know if i waited too long to take her out or what but she died. I suppose I learned a lot but I'm not happy that it seems like it was at the expense of this chick.

please don't blame yourself sometimes events happen and we think we should or should not have done something, this could have gone either way. Now let me ask you a few things. Did you have any hatch from this batch? what breed was she? another words let me know some of your incubation techniques and we can try to help you figure it all out. In my signature below is the hatching 101 article and I put just about everything I refer to in it to help others. At some point I want to make a checklist for when I help others, like what bator you use, fan or not, temp used where temp was taken, eggs rotated x? and moves around the bator, ventilation, humidity use? weigh or mark air cells via candle, lockdown lay or upright and if others hatched, if so what day time est, breed, I know it sounds like a zil questions but its all very important factors in incubating, once you get them down you got it!

Also in the hatching 101 article towards the bottom is a ton of links to "what went wrong" Remember if you can upload images its the best way to get help, it helps us SEE what is going on, size of chick, color of membranes, size of air cells and so on.

And remember please don't blame yourself, all we can do is try to figure out what went wrong and fix it! Incubating is an amazing and fun process!
