Not hard to be happy in a HOA if you're the board president. Especially if you're pulling in like minded people as board members.
It's when you're just the guy down the block trying to take advantage of being a home and property owner and dealing with a board that wants things their way when unhappiness usually comes into play.

Exactly. I completely understand why HOA's exist, but there are always issues, depending on who is on the HOA board.

I worked for the city in the liens department here. There are no liens on property for HOA. That’s not to say it doesn’t happen and yes they can try to cause problems. I’m saying, like I said before, it’s up to you if you are going to have a system that’s not part of the government regulating what you are doing with the property you own.

Again that’s up to each person.

I wasn't always board pres. I was a homeowner for years before I got involved at all. I finally got sick of the way things were falling apart and took action to try and improve the property (condo complex) Point being that with smaller HOAs you really can make changes if you make an effort to be part of it. I didn't enjoy being on the board particularly, but at least then you get a voice and a vote and get to be part of the decision making. Sure you get out voted sometimes and not everyone agrees (ever), but at least your opinion is taken into consideration.
