I've always just used a 250 watt red bulb...i don't think they need anything else. The red also helps by keeping them from pecking each other which is good Never had any problems, and i have raised many clutches

How are they doing?

I depends on quite a few facotrs. I've raised them in the coop (with a heat souce of course ) and i have raised them inside.

you should change them if they are dirty....if not, leave them. depending on how many i have in the brooders, i at least change the bedding around the water daily, and the other every week (unless i have a lot in a smaller space, then i clean the whole thing daily.

how can you tell if a five week chick is a rooster or a hen ? I ordered 1 rooster that was supposed to be a BPR but I have a RIR that looks a lot like a rooster.(it has a large comb) just because it has a large comb does that mean it is a rooster?

a large comb can be a good indicator, but you can't be totally sure until they are older.

It turned out to be a rooster but it got killed by a dog anyway.
