Hi everyone,

One of my four hens was looking abit under the weather for the last 5 or 6 days. Very pale and not moving around much. She was still eating and drinking though.

Yesterday I went out to collect the eggs and found this in the nest box. It’s hard, and smelly, and have no idea whatsoever about what it could be. She does however seem to be feeling much better since so my guess is it’s her who layed it.

I don’t suppose anyone could possibly shed some light on what it could be?

Thanks!

Hi thanks for the reply!

I did see those when I was searching online but didn’t see anything that looked similar! What would be the cause of this and could it be the reason that the hen was I’ll or just a coincidence?

Thankyou!

If you still have it, cut it open to see what it looks like inside. It's either a lash egg or it's a malformed egg shell. Lash eggs are caused by infection/inflammation of the oviduct, called salpingitis, link with more info on that below. If it's a malformed egg, those can be hard to pass and can make them feel very unwell. I would keep an eye on her, see if she lays again normally or not.
