Somewhere beyond the Rainbow...
Hi,

One of the chickens in my flock is sick with the same thing almost every month. I thought it was Cocci, but now I am not sure... I give her and the others Corid, and it seems to cure it, unless she just gets over it. Her symtoms are :

she doesn't eat very much,

her tail is lower to the ground than normal,

she almost always has her eyes closed

she stays in the coop most of the time.

I did notice something different about this month though, she has a full crop and an almost completely black comb. I also realized that she gets this on cold days, and it goes away when it warms up a little. It could be frostbite, and I could see that because we just had a large snow storm here in Denver, so if you do think it is, how do you get rid of it and how do you prevent it from coming back? If you think it might be something else too, let me know!

Thank you!!!!!

Have you tried worming her? I use 1/2 CC valbazen, throw the eggs, and repeat in 10 ten days. Only eating the eggs two weeks after last dosage.

Also while worming, offering pumpkins, buttermilk, yogurt, and ACV in water is very healthy!

There can be a number of different symptoms, but mainly a ravenous chicken, skinny chicken, plumped out abdomen, tail pointing to ground, straining, are the main ones.

I have practically no winter where I live, so frostbite is unknown to me. But I still wouldn't rule out worms too fast!

I would isolate her. If you have a kitchen scale, see how much she weighs. Keep her warm - 85°F is the ideal temperature. Maybe try using a dropper to get her to drink some water.

How old is she? How long do symptoms last? How long has this been occurring? Is she laying?

I am a newbie, so have no suggestions on the black comb or crop. Maybe sour crop?
