Just get plans for (or buy) a minnow trap, place an egg in it and set it in the area.
I am near air ports, my oldest rooster has never liked the planes flying over, calls alerts and gets the girls under something. When the plane is gone he then calls an all's clear.

Now that you mention eggs as bait, something came to mind. When I went out to check on them while they were freaking out, they were running out of the nesting box. Maybe something was going after their eggs.

I have lost a few eggs and chicks to snakes, when my girls are upset me and the dogs go see whats up. Good luck!
