Unsafe types of wood?

We have just recently had a few trees taken down and a few of the branches look like they would make nice perches for my girls. The trees were sweat gum( has the spiky balls) and Canpher (smell reminds me of cough drops) would these be safe to use. These are my first chicks and i would hate to harm them.

The branches will be fine. Make sure they're thick enough to give the birds good footing. I was going to warn of frostbite with narrow branches and then I saw you live in Florida.

Thanks, no frostbite here we are more worried about heat stroke than the cold. The branches are 3-5in thick.

Ahhh, sweet gum trees. I have had about 5 of these taken out of my yard, and still have two. When we mow the lawn it launches those seed pods out like little prickly missiles!
