This morning, I went out to the coop and noticed my easter egger, Nutmeg, is not in the run. I figured she was chilling in the nesting box as she sometimes does. After a few moments, I open the nesting box, since she hasn't come out yet. I saw two eggs from my other chickens and blood. I see Nutmeg in the far side of the coop, belly up, legs in the air.
So I go and open up the coop and find Nutmeg dead. She looks like she partially pooped out her insides. I'm assuming she was egg-bound and that killed her while she was trying to lay this morning.
I didn't take any photos, as I didn't want to upload gross content. But there was a part that looked like a large clump of matted poop stuck to her bum area. When I checked it with a stick, it opened up and looked like...I don't know...Body stuff.
She seemed fine yesterday. She even laid an egg the day before. In fact, once it got cold, she has been the steady egg layer while the others dropped off.
The only thing I could think of would be that she got egg-bound, and that killed her. She was less than 2 years old, healthy, and laying eggs regularly. It's kind of shocking that she could appear perfectly fine the day before, and the next morning...Pllbtt!
