These are mixed chicks… red ranger roo hybrid x Dominique OR Sapphire Gem hybrid hens.

My question is why the one chick with the head spot doesn’t seem to have barring. Can other breeds have this? Also, what is the coloring called on the other chick? Looks like it is black background and tips mottle gray and gold.

They are 7 days old.

The second chick probably has the SG as a mother, and is not sex linked since SG females do not have the barring gene. Its color is black with gold and possibly silver leakage.

The other chick is a big mystery. Does it have a rose comb that would indicate that the Dominique is the mother (that is if the Dominique has the correct comb)? If so, then it is very unusual to have a sex linked chick with a head spot but no barring, and I am not sure what is going on. It might be a question for the genetics forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/exhibition-genetics-breeding-to-the-sop.16188/

For the Dominique cross- solid black chick- you likely have a pullet if the Red Ranger is truly red (don't know what cross breeding goes into that mix).

A barred hen only has one barring gene, and when mated with a solid colored roo will produce barred sons and solid daughters.

The genetics calculator above is fun to tinker with- it's a two step process. Look for the English row to select 'Choose Color' and there are pull down options. Make your selections, and to the far right of the colors is 'To Chicken Calculator'. Click on that...

It will bring up a new page with a BUNCH of genetics details- at the bottom of the detail there's a green bar, and the first button is 'Calculate Crossing'- click that and scroll down a little to see what's the sons and daughters look like. Usually there are two options, sometimes there are four.
