Unusual periorbital growth

Found this growth on the periorbital flesh of one of our chickens. We had just purchased four new girls and they had only been with us about 48/72 hours. Any idea what it could be. We'd decided to watch it for a couple of days to see if the raised area was a hematoma or an insect sting, thinking that it might go away with time. It has been about a week with no changes either way. Would appreciate any help you may be able to offer. Pictures are attached.

Could it be an abscess? Is there any sign of an old injury to the area? A scab or scar? Is it hard or soft to touch? Any unusual respiratory symptoms? Any issues with the eye? If you touch it does it seem to hurt the bird?

I am thinking it might be an abscess, although it is in a fairly odd location.
