Unusual Rooster Behavior

Wow! Broken neck! Poor guy 😩 that makes total sense with his symptoms though. Good information, thanks for sharing. How are you going to be able to help him heal? Is it even possible??
from what I have heard, there is no way to fix his neck. I have also heard that most chicken farmers will kill them when this happens. I would hate to kill him, but he is no longer fertilizing eggs or even attempting to mount the hens anymore. and I have some concerns about introducing a new rooster to the flock

Yeaaaah... if it's not fixable, I would probably put him down too. That's so awful, I'm sorry you're dealing with that.

Personally, if he were mine, I'd cull him. I can't imagine the quality of life with a broken neck. Not to mention that the others will probably bully him when they pick up on his disability.

Please don't take this as advice. You have to do what you feel is right. I'm sorry you're in this situation in the first place. I wish you the very best! šŸ’™

apologies for the late reply, the rooster has a broken neck and the drainage from the ears is most likely due to constant lowering of the head. Other than that he is fine, but we are still debating on what we should do as I believe he is no longer fertilizing eggs

my apologies, I said crested but I was referring to his comb, I have since learned the proper terminology. We have found out that his neck is broken and that is most likely the cause of the drainage due to his lowered head position. But I believe he has stopped fertilizing our eggs

You had XRays to confirm a broken neck?

I'm so sorry, what course of treatment did the vet suggest for him?

It was recommended to put him down. He was not x-rayed by a vet but he was examined and they concluded a broken neck due to the bone protrusion from the side of his neck. They said there’s not a whole lot they can do about a broken neck

Oh, that's so sad.

Is he able to get around, eat/drink on his own?
Does he act like he's in pain?

IF he's able to somewhat "take care" of himself on his own and you don't see signs that he's in pain, then you may want to baby him along.

I do agree, introducing another rooster into the same flock/coop/run/enclosure with him would be very hard on him and he may even be attacked or harmed by a "healthy" rooster. BUT, you could house him in a separate coop/run/area perhaps with just another couple of old hens since he's not "active" in the mating department. Make a trio and they should be fine, this way he's got his own ladies and he'd be content. You could house him by himself. I've kept roosters by themselves, they were fine, but they are near the others so they can see one another.
